“Eagle vs. Shark” is Taika Waititi’s feature-length directorial debut. It stars Loren Taylor and Waititi’s frequent collaborator Jemaine Clement. An offbeat rom-com, the movie follows two socially-awkward nerds who make a love connection at a costume party, dressed as an Eagle and a Shark. Though they’re seemingly made for each other, their relationship is put to the test when one’s revenge on a high school bully takes precedent.
The 2007 film only received a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s still a funny watch for fans of Waititi and lead actor Jemaine Clement (“Flight of the Conchords.”)

This comedy-drama stars James Rolleston as Boy, an 11-year-old kid in 1984 who loves Michael Jackson. With his mother deceased and his father MIA, Boy finds himself head of the household when his Nana leaves on a trip during summer vacation. In addition to writing and directing, Taika Waititi also stars as Alamein, Boy’s absentee father.
“Boy” came out in 2010 and holds an “88% Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘What We Do in the Shadows’ (2014)

“What We Do in the Shadows” is a mockumentary following the daily lives of four vampires. From roommate disputes over chores to werewolf feuds, the group deals with a mix of mundane and supernatural conflicts. Taika Waititi co-wrote, co-directed, and co-starred in this one alongside Jemaine Clement.
The film came out in 2014 and received a “96% Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was followed by two spin-off series: “Wellington Paranormal” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” The first follows two officers from the film and is available to watch on HBO Max; the second stars a whole new cast of vampires set in the US and can be found on Hulu.
‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’ (2016)

“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” stars Sam Neill as Hector and Julian Dennison as Ricky, Hector’s foster child. After a chain of events leads the pair into the New Zealand brush, they become the the target of a manhunt. The comedy drama also features Rhys Darby, who stars alongside Taika Waititi in HBO Max’s “Our Flag Means Death.”
“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” came out in 2016 and holds a”97% Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics praised the movie’s sense of humor and heartfelt story.

In the third entry in Marvel’s Thor saga, Thor finds himself in a race against time to save the Asgardian people from Ragnarok, a devastating event that could mean the end of their world. The film features an all-star cast including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum, and even Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. Once again, Waititi not only directs the movie, but he also appears in the cast as Korg, a friendly alien made of stone.
“Ragnarok” is known for taking the Thor franchise in a more comedic direction, and critics responded well to the film’s fun and witty tone. The 2017 movie holds a “93% Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Jojo Rabbit’ (2019)

Loosely based on the novel “Caging Skies” by Christine Leunen, “Jojo Rabbit” follows Joannes “Jojo” Betzler, a 10-year-old growing up in Nazi Germany. Scarlett Johansson stars as his mother, a member of the German resistance who is sheltering a teenage Jewish girl, unbeknownst to Jojo. Taika Waititi directs and stars in the dramedy, this time playing a satirical version of Hitler that serves as Jojo’s imaginary friend.
“Jojo Rabbit” premiered in 2019 and holds an “80% Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Waititi received an Oscar for writing the movie’s screenplay.

After the success of “Ragnarok,” Waititi returned to direct the franchise’s latest installment, “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Following the events of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” Thor embarks on a new quest for inner peace. When his journey is disrupted by a violent force that’s killing gods, he teams up with King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) to stop it. Waititi reprises his role as the voice of as Korg.
The film debuted in theaters on July 8 and is expected to hit Disney Plus in the coming months. Since its release, it’s received a “66% Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
