PS VR2 comes with two wireless controllers but will need to be wired to a PlayStation 5 to work.
Sony says more than 20 games will be available for PS VR2 at launch, with more in development.

Sony will launch the PlayStation VR2 on February 22, 2023, one year after it was announced at CES 2022. PS VR2 will cost $550 and preorders will be available from Sony’s PlayStation Direct store on November 15.

PlayStation VR2 will require a PS5 console to play, and it needs a wired USB-C connection while in use. The virtual reality headset will come with two wireless PS VR2 Sense controllers, and a pair of headphones; a controller charging station will be sold separately for $50.

To help you decide whether the PS VR2 is a good fit for your gaming needs, we’ve broken down all of the device’s key features and specs, along with details on how you can preorder it and what games you can expect to play.

PS VR2 features

The PlayStation VR2 carries over many features found on the original model released in 2016, while offering a few key upgrades and new options.

Like the original headset, the VR2 must be wired to a PS5 for use, but it does have its own built-in motion and eye tracking without an external sensor or camera. The original PlayStation VR required an external camera for motion detection.

PS VR2 will also now provide a “see-through view” to let players check their surroundings without taking off the headset, and players can set the boundaries for their play area using the headset’s cameras.

Visuals on PS VR2 will also benefit from a higher resolution OLED display that supports 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) contrast. The display will operate with a 90Hz or 120Hz refresh rate for a smooth picture.

PS VR2 will support PlayStation’s 3D audio technology for spatial sound, and the headset features a built-in mic and a port for headphones.

The PS VR2 Sense controller will have adaptive triggers with adjustable sensitivity and haptic feedback, just like the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller. The headset will also have its own haptic feedback.

How does the PS VR2 price compare to competing VR headsets?

At $550, the PS VR2 is pricier than an actual PS5 console and significantly more expensive than the $400 Meta Quest 2, the most popular VR headset currently on the market. The Quest 2 also works as a standalone device, while the PS VR2 requires a PS5 to work, which costs an extra $400-$500, in addition to the console being hard to find.

Meta does offer a more expensive $1,500 headset, the Meta Quest Pro, but it’s being marketed as a device for working professionals rather than a gaming platform. That said, other competitors designed for PC cost way more than PS VR2, like the Valve Index and the $750 Vive Cosmos Elite, both of which require external sensors that PS VR2 doesn’t need.

While it’s expensive, PS VR2 is designed to deliver some of the best performance available in the VR space, as well as several PlayStation-exclusive titles built for VR.

What games are coming to PS VR2?

Sony expects at least 20 games to be available at launch for PS VR2; so far 15 games have been announced, including a full port of Resident Evil Village, which will be available at no extra cost for players who own the standard version of the game. Here’s the full list of confirmed games so far:
