Many of the miners met their deaths due to accidents, but in those days, there were other factors to consider as well. The conditions were unsanitary, there was a scarcity of water and fresh vegetables, and in summer, the scorching heat took its toll. Yet the workers persisted, and certain changes were made on the 13th of March 1888.
