Meta Quest Pro: Release date, price and specs

The Meta Quest Pro (also known as Project Cambria) is expected to launch in the near future, offering improved specs and performance compared to the existing Meta Quest 2.

Meta has already confirmed a number of new features for the headset, including colour passthrough and eye-tracking technology.

However, Mark Zuckerberg has told investors (reported by Upload VR) that the Meta Quest Pro will “be more focused on work use cases” compared to the standard Quest headset. This indicates that it will likely cost a lot of money, and so may not be a good option for those looking to use it for entertainment.

We’ve rounded up all the major news and rumours ahead of launch, and will be updating this article as soon as we hear more about the Meta Quest Pro.

Release date

The Meta Quest Pro is expected to be unveiled during Meta’s Connect Conference on 11th October 2022.

Mark Zuckerberg has already confirmed that Meta will be launching a new VR headset this October, so we’re expecting the headset to arrive in stores before the end of the month.

Pricing

The pricing is yet to be confirmed for the Meta Quest Pro, though Zuckerberg did mention that it will sit at the higher end of the price spectrum, meaning it will likely cost far more than the Oculus Quest 2.

The Quest 2 recently saw a price increase to £399/$399.99 for the 128GB model, and £499/$499.99 for the 256GB configuration.

Upload VR reports that a Meta spokesperson confirmed that the Meta Quest Pro will cost “significantly” more than the touted $800 price point. This reinforces the point that the Pro model isn’t intended for the everyday person, but for businesses instead.

Specs and features

Meta hasn’t confirmed any of the specs for the Quest Pro headset just yet, but there have been plenty of leaks and rumours surrounding the upcoming headset.

Renowned technology analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the headset will be powered by a Snapdragon XR2 chip, while also featuring a 2.48-inch Mini LED display with a 2160×2160 resolution per eye.

The Quest Pro is also expected to use a pancake lens which, compared to the more traditional Fresnel lenses, enables the lens to sit much closer to the display and potentially allow Meta to reduce the overall size of the headset.

The most exciting feature for the Meta Quest Pro will be the eye- and face-tracking technology. The headset will be able to detect where you’re looking, so you may be able to use your gaze like a mouse pointer.

Zuckerberg has also confirmed that face tracking will allow the headset to determine your facial expressions, so your in-game avatar can mimic your frowns and smiles. This should result in more immersive experiences, especially for meeting rooms and the like.

It also looks like the Meta Quest Pro will be just as much an AR (augmented reality) headset as a VR headset, with the company confirming the headset will support colour passthrough. This means you’ll be able to see your real-world surroundings in colour with the headset still strapped to your face.

Meta released the above video to show how the headset can blend your real-world environment with virtual objects to great effect. Zuckerberg claims the sensors that make this possible will provide a 3x resolution boost compared to the Quest 2.

That’s all we know right now, but make sure to keep this page bookmarked as we’ll be updating it as soon as we hear more information regarding the VR headset.
