How to create and customize folders on an iPhone to organize your apps

To create a new folder on your iPhone, all you need to do is drag one app onto another.
Folders can contain more than one page, so you have plenty of space for related apps.
Creating folders can declutter your home screen and keep similar apps together.

If you’re like most people, chances are your iPhone is full of apps that you use daily and others that only come in handy on rare occasions.

An abundance of downloaded apps can mean scrolling through multiple screens to find the one you want, and if you’re someone who prefers a bit more organization, this can be a nightmare.

Thankfully, you can easily organize your iPhone apps into folders. Creating and naming folders is a simple process that can be completed in just a few seconds. Here’s what you need to know.

How to create a new folder on your iPhone

1. To create a folder, press and hold the icon of the app you would like to move into a folder, then tap Edit Home Screen in the pop-up menu.

You can also hold down an app until it starts to shake, but this method is a little faster.

2. When all of your application icons begin to shake and a small “-” appears in the upper left-hand side of each icon, hold and drag the app to another app you would like to place in the same folder. Hovering one app icon over another will create a folder; stop holding down the application icon to drop both applications into your new folder.

Placing two audio streaming apps within a folder resulted in it being titled “Music.”

Quick tip: If you’ve accidentally dropped an app into the wrong folder, simply drag it out of the folder it’s in and into a different one.

1. To begin, press and hold any of the app icons from inside the folder you want to change the name of until the apps within it begin to shake and a small “-” appears in the upper left-hand side of each.

2. When this happens, the title box of the folder will become editable. Tap within it, then type the name you would like the folder to have.

Renaming folders can help you remember what apps are inside them.

1. To delete an iPhone folder, simply press and hold the icon of any app within that folder until all the apps begin to shake and a small “-” appears in the upper left-hand corner.

2. Press and drag the apps one at a time from within the folder to your home screen. Once the folder is empty, it will automatically be deleted.

3. Tap Done at the top-right of the screen when you’re finished.

Tap Done to save your changes.

Quick tip: To delete an app, tap the “-” symbol on the app icon, or press and hold the app icon and tap Remove App in the pop-up menu.

There are only so many spaces available on one iPhone page, and if you want to start fresh you can move an app to a brand new page.

1. Press and hold the app you would like to move to a new page, then tap Edit Home Screen in the pop-up menu.

2. Hold and drag the app to the right side of the screen to open a new page. Let go to drop the app in the new page.

You can choose to organize your apps by pages rather than folders, or use a combination of both.

Quick tip: To delete a page, drag all of the apps on that page to a different home screen. The page will automatically be deleted when there are no apps in it.
