How to change your AirDrop settings on an iPhone or iPad so strangers can’t send you photos

You’ve got two ways to change your AirDrop settings.

To change your AirDrop settings on an iPhone or iPad, open the General section of the Settings app and tap AirDrop.
You can set your AirDrop to be visible to everyone, just your contacts, or no one.
You can also change your AirDrop settings through your device’s Control Center.

AirDrop can be an incredibly useful tool when you’re trying to move photos and videos from one iPhone to another, or from your phone to an iPad. But it’s less useful when you’re on the subway, and suddenly receive an AirDrop from someone you’ve never seen before.

Luckily, there are two quick ways to change your AirDrop settings and limit who can send you things.

How to change your AirDrop settings

The Settings app

The standard way to change your iPhone or iPad’s AirDrop settings is to go through the Settings app.

Open the Settings app and scroll down to tap General, and then tap AirDrop.

You’ll then get to choose who can AirDrop files to you: Everyone, Contacts Only, or no one (Receiving Off).

If you choose Contacts Only, only devices that are registered in your iPhone or iPad’s Contacts list can AirDrop you. And if you choose Contacts Only or Receiving Off, your device won’t ever appear when strangers try to AirDrop files.

Head to the AirDrop menu in the “General” section.

The Control Center

You can also find your AirDrop settings in the Control Center, the menu that appears when you swipe down from the top-right corner of your iPhone or iPad.

Open the Control Center, then tap and hold the box in the top-left that holds the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons. When the menu expands, tap AirDrop and choose whether you want AirDrop to be open to Everyone, Contacts Only, or no one (Receiving Off).

You’ll need to tap and hold the connections box to find the AirDrop option.
