If you need money to help cover the cost of college, you’ll use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine which types of financial aid you qualify for. This may include grants, scholarships, work-study, and loans.
How long does it take for my FAFSA to be processed?
Your application should process in a few days if you submit it online, and it will take seven to 10 days to process if you send in the form through the mail. You’ll want to check the status of your FAFSA to see if your application was properly completed.
Make sure to submit your form well before the deadline to prevent any issues with processing time. The deadline for the 2022-23 award year is June 30, 2023, while the deadline for the 2023-24 academic year is June 30, 2024.
Where can you find the status of your FAFSA?
To see your status, you can log into the FAFSA website with your Federal Student Aid ID or reach out to the FSA office directly. If you log in online, you can see the status of your FAFSA on the “My FAFSA” page, which shows up immediately after you sign in if you’ve already started or completed the form.
If your FAFSA is missing any information, such as a signature, complete it and submit the application. Your “My FAFSA” page will offer directions to resolve any other problems you may have with your FAFSA.
You’re also able to submit corrections to your FAFSA if need be. Simply log into your account and select the “Make FAFSA Corrections” option on your “My FAFSA” page.
You may also need to fill out other forms to qualify for financial aid at certain schools, like the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile. You can check the status of your CSS Profile on the College Board website or over the phone.
To check on your complete financial aid package, reach out to your school’s financial aid office. It may take weeks or months for a school to make a financial aid offer, and it will come after the school accepts you for enrollment.
