She had the dog eating out of her hand’s palm, but strays could still be unpredictable. She didn’t want to give the impression that she would take away whatever was in the gutter from the animal. She only wished to assist if she could.

So she fed the sausage to the dog and witnessed her experiment develop. The dog approached the drain cover and, sure enough, dropped half of the sausage again. It wasn’t by mistake!
