Chief Justice John Roberts issued a temporary stay Tuesday on a lower court ruling ordering former President Donald Trump to turn his taxes over to the House Committee on Ways & Means.
Roberts’ order is not a final ruling but places a temporary hold on the federal appeals court’s ruling while the Supreme Court weighs Trump’s request to overturn the ruling.
Trump’s lawyers made an emergency request for a stay on Monday, asking the high court to block the IRS from turning years of the former president’s personal tax records over to the Ways & Means Committee.
In the filing, Trump accused lawmakers of trying to “expose” his tax information to the public “for the sake of exposure.”
“The Committee’s purpose in requesting President Trump’s tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the President’s tax information to the public,” the filing said.
