With the next Microsoft Surface event on the horizon, with early reports suggesting we’ll see the launch of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5.
The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 was released over a year ago, and we’re expecting to see an upgrade to the series very soon.
If you’re interested in learning more about the potential specs, design, price and release date for the Surface Laptop 5, keep reading, as we will be updating this article whenever more news and leaks come to light.
Release date
While Microsoft has not given any specific dates for the launch of the Surface Laptop 5, we can make some guesses.
Microsoft’s annual Surface event will be taking place this year on 12th October.
This suggests that the Surface Laptop 5 will be revealed during this event, with Windows Central’s Zac Bowden claiming that the laptop will launch later in October thanks to ongoing component shortages.
Assuming that this is correct, it’s likely that the laptop will be revealed during the Surface event and then become available to the public a few weeks after.
Price
Microsoft has also been tight-lipped about the pricing for the Surface Laptop 5, however, we would expect it to follow a similar pattern as the other laptops in the series.
The two latest laptops in the Surface Laptop series started at £999, so it’s likely that the Surface Laptop 5 will sit in that same bracket.
Specs
German tech site WinFuture has reported that the Surface Laptop 5 will come with the latest 12th-generation Intel Core processors, with a choice between the Core i5-1235U and i7-1255U.
The Intel U-Series is known for being included in power efficient laptops, which would work well for a basic productivity laptop like the Surface Laptop range.
It seems as if Microsoft won’t be offering any AMD configurations this time round, despite the recent reveal of Ryzen 7000 Series of processors.
No matter the CPU options available, we expect the Surface Laptop 5 to come with integrated graphics and no discrete GPU option since this laptop is not aimed at content creators or gamers.
Surface Laptop 4
Moreover, WindowsPrime‘s spec sheets claim that the Surface Laptop 5 will come with a new 1080p webcam, an upgrade compared to the 720p webcam that can be found on the Surface Laptop 4.
The same spec sheet also has teased a new improved design, with PixelSense Flow 120Hz refresh rate. This would result in a smoother experience for users, with Microsoft already using the faster refresh rate technology on the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio.
It’s also expected to come preinstalled with Windows 11 out of the box, although that’s not too surprising considering it is a Microsoft laptop.
We could also see the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4 on the latest Surface Laptop, with XDADevelopers claiming that the Intel variations will now be able to support Thunderbolt docks and displays.
Design
The Surface Laptop 5 should come in two sizes: 13.5-inch and 15-inch. Both variations seem to pack the same resolution, at 2256×1504, while both have an aspect ratio of 3:2. Plus, both should have support for the Surface Pen and be touch-enabled.
The upcoming laptop should also come in four different colour options: Ice Blue, Matte Black, Sandstone and Platinum. It’s expected to pack two USB-C inputs – it’s unclear how many of these will have Thunderbolt support – one USB-A port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a Surface Connect port.

While nothing concrete has been confirmed about the design yet, we hope to see the Surface Laptop 5 sporting a slimmed-down bezel, since our review complained about the outdated style of the Surface Laptop 4 last year.
