The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card doesn’t earn rewards or come with a welcome bonus, but it’s a solid pick if you’re looking for a no-annual-fee card with an unusually long introductory 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers.
Review: Is the US Bank Visa Platinum the best credit card for you?
Using a credit card to earn points, miles, or cash back is a great way to build up a stash of rewards you can use for travel or offsetting day-to-day expenses. But if you have big purchases you can’t afford to pay off right away, or are carrying high-interest balances on other credit cards, you could realize even bigger savings by opening a card with an introductory 0% APR offer.
The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card doesn’t come with a sign-up bonus or earn rewards on spending, but it does have an exceptional feature. New cardholders qualify for a U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card (balance transfers must be made within 60 days of account opening), followed by a U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card APR.
As long as you make at least your minimum payment each month, you won’t pay interest for a full 18 billing cycles — that’s one of the longest 0% intro APR periods available on any credit card right now. Whether you’re facing a surprise expense like a medical bill or car repair, or want to pay down your current high-interest credit card debt, the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card can give you the breathing room you need to achieve your goals.
While the card doesn’t come with many benefits, there is one perk that could potentially save you money. When you use the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card to pay your wireless bill, you’re eligible for cell phone coverage against damage or theft of up to $600 per claim, with a $25 deductible.
Before you decide on the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card, keep in mind there are other credit cards with introductory 0% APR offers that do earn rewards. For instance, the Citi® Double Cash Card earns 1 point per dollar (1% back) when you make a purchase and 1 point per dollar (1% back) when you pay it off, and it comes with a Citi® Double Cash Card (then a Citi® Double Cash Card APR).
Or consider the U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card, which offers a welcome bonus of U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card and earns up to 5% cash back in eligible categories. New cardholders receive a U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card (then a U.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card APR).
We’re focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card. These cards won’t be worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.
Benefits and features
The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card isn’t packed with benefits like many popular rewards credit cards, but it comes with some handy features.
Introductory 0% APR
As mentioned, the big draw of the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card is its extra-long 0% introductory APR offer. New cardholders are eligible for a U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card (completed within the first 60 days of account opening), then a U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card APR.
Taking advantage of a 0% intro APR offer can save you a substantial amount of money if you’d otherwise carry a balance on a high-interest credit card. Just be sure you have the means and a plan to pay off your balance before the introductory period expires, otherwise you could find yourself in more debt.
Cell phone protection
When you pay your monthly wireless bill with the U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card, you can be covered for cell phone damage or theft, up to $600 per claim with a $25 deductible. To be eligible, you must charge your monthly cell phone bill to your card in the calendar month prior to the month in which the incident occurs.
Cardholders are limited to a maximum of two claims per 12-month period. This coverage is secondary to other policies you may have, which may include homeowners, renters, or separate cell phone insurance.
Fees and costs
The U.S. Bank Visa® Platinum Card has no annual fee, so it’s free to keep for the long term and, in doing so, potentially help boost your credit score.
This isn’t a good card to use overseas, because it adds foreign transaction fees. As with most other cards, there are also fees for balance transfers, cash advances, late payments, and returned payments.
